Our stay here did not start well. When we arrived in the late morning after a transatlantic flight, the foyer of the hotel was completely ripped up, in the middle of a complete redecoration/reconstruction, and therefore we could not wait there in comfort while we waited for the room to become available. We could wait in the brasserie downstairs, but that was a bit cramped, and awkward, as we were just hanging out, not ordering anything but a cup of tea. Also, our room did not become available until exactly at 3pm, which is unusually rigid, even for rule-abiding Scots. From then on, however, our stay was excellent. The room for which we had waited so long was a lovely suite, with more than enough room for the two of us, and with a great deal of charm and character (and a very nice bathroom). And the staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. Even the breakfast that we had on our last day was good, and in the light and airy part of the brasserie that had been closed when we first arrived. Indeed the foyer area was already beginning to resume some form of order and comfort, with chairs brought back in. Overall this was an excellent stay, despite first impressions. less
