We spent two days on vacation at the Bruntsfield and found it a great base to explore Edinburgh.
Location is perfect. While only about a 15 minutes’ walk away from the main tourist spots of Edinburgh Old Town, the hotel sits in what appears to be a relatively quiet, high-end but atmospheric residential neighbourhood, facing the greenery expanse of the Meadows. The main street of Bruntsfield Place also offers some pleasant dining options.
The hotel’s reception and common areas are what one would expect from a traditional 4-star in the UK, with comfortable lounges and tea / coffee on free access throughout the day.
The room layout is in my opinion the weaker point. This is an old building, which may have been converted to modern hotel standards recently, resulting in irregularly shaped rooms, poor natural lighting and quite a few blind corners. This is structural and not much that the hotel can do about.
Room equipment, however, is of superior quality, with good beddings and excellent heating - a must in Scotland. Bathrooms are not luxurious but very practical, with good water supply at steady temperatures. Free wifi in the rooms, not the fastest but generally works. The whole place is spotlessly clean.
What could be improved is the soundproofing. Our room, facing the street, was exposed to noise from outside road works on our second night - again, not much to do about it - but we could also distinctly hear the TV in the next room on both nights. Next time Best Western invests in upgrading this property, I would suggest this to be a priority.
The hotel’s restaurant, located in the lower ground floor, offer gourmet-quality food at surprisingly low prices, and excellent service. Well worth a visit in its own right, even for non-guests.
For those driving, free parking is available in the hotel yard. A word of warning: there are only about 25 spaces; when it’s full, one has to rely on street parking while waiting for one space to free up. The hotel is however pragmatic: when we arrived, all parking lots were occupied, but we managed to squeeze our small car in an unmarked corner of the yard, and since we did not block traffic they were happy to accommodate.
Keeping the best for last: we found outstanding service at the Bruntsfield. They were prompt and efficient at addressing our every request, of which we had quite a few; attentive and eager to help, even willing to think out of the box if needed. Special mention to Regina at the front desk, whose kindness and simplicity must count as an asset of the hotel.
Warmly recommended. less
