I had booked The Bruntsfield for long weekend break over Easter, for myself and a friend. I had been attracted by the combination of price, location and reviews. Based upon the price I had arrived with reasonable expectations. I was very pleasantly suprised to say that they were exceeded on numerous occasions throughout the stay.
We had arrived on an early flight so weren't expecting to be able to book in, however, the staff of reception were very friendly and helpful about leaving luggage and completing check in so when room was ready later could simply collect the key.
Although the room was a single it was fairly well sized and with pleasant outlook. The bathroom although a bit dated and in need of some updating did the job it was supposed to so the small flaws were nor serious enough to mark it down.
The bed although softer than I an used to proved very comfortable, as did the pillows. Pillows are something I am very fussy about and I often find hotel ones uncomfortable. These were so good I had to take the covers off to find out the make, and have now ordered some.
One small criticism of the room was that as I like to sleep with the window open, if people from the bar in basement stood outside smoking you could occasionaly smell it.
The staff in the bar and restaurant were all very friendly and welcoming, especially the charming James, who all made us feel very welcome. Had planned to eat out whilst in Edinburgh but ended up enjoying meals in the hotel.
There is a comfy lounge at the front of the hotel, ideal for relaxing and enjoying a brandy after the meal. This is where my other criticism comes in. The background music was at times rather annoying, whilst it was I think intended to be fairly non descripte it did get a little annoyingly repetitive. However, based upon experience of staff am sure if I had asked they would have turned it down.
As I often stay away with work I am used to the bland corporate boxes of modern business hotels. That is why I so fell for the Bruntsfield, a lovely hotel with lots of character, a few small flaws here and there, but nothing that spoilt my enjoyment. But with the added bonus of a brilliant team of staff. Will certainly be back. less
