great location, but poor value given its price

We had a large comfortable bed in a spacious room, a reasonably sized bathroom with a bath, toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities with biscuits, and the buffet breakfast was good, and the staff we met were friendly and helpful, and the hotel is located opposite urban parkland in the affluent Edinburgh suburb of Bruntsfield, quite close to the city centre, with some free parking available to guests, which is helpful as the roads around the hotel are controlled parking zones. But...if you're going to badge your own brand as "plus" and charge as much as this hotel does, then there are quite a few things that you should be doing, and not doing. When we arrived the entrance hall was covered on both sides with pieces of paper billowing in the wind, to indicate perhaps half-finished decorations; we had to wait for the one receptionist to be available, as she had several things to contend with (so there needed to be a second receptionist) and whilst we waited we thought we would have a cup of the free coffee in the reception area - but the flask was empty. The door to our room (No.146) didn't fit tightly, so vibrated every time someone opened the fire door in the corridor (we wedged it tight with some paper), there was no air conditioning (just an electric fire for when it was cold and a fan for when it was hot) and no bottled water nor a mini fridge/bar. The TV had the usual bog-standard Freeview channels, rather than some kind of subscription package or even just BBC iplayer and ITV Hub. Our bath towels went missing after the first day and we had to request replacements, and our pyjamas were just tossed on to furniture when our bed was made, rather than folded and put on the bed. It was possible to order breakfast in bed, but not a cooked breakfast. Some of these things I don't mind and are unimportant compared to world hunger for example, and we had a perfectly comfortable time, but if you're charging that much for a room then you should be providing more. The Great Western bean counters need to be investing more in this hotel to make it good value, both in terms of room attributes and also more staff. At the moment they're trading on their location and that's not good enough. less
