I'd been out of town for work, and on my way back to my home just outside of town, when my neighbor called to tell me that there'd been a failure in the 2nd floor plumbing, flooding my house on all three levels and leaving me with nowhere to stay. A quick call to the Alpena Best Western secured lodging for me for the next 8 nights, despite not having a reservation in advance. The room was clean, comfortable and well-furnished, with a comfortable queen bed, large dresser, wardrobe, and a spacious table with two comfortable chairs to use as both workspace as well as a dining area. Included also were a microwave plus a good-sized refrigerator, the latter large enough to hold a gallon of milk, a gallon of tea, 12 cans of soda plus some leftovers from the nearby Applebee's.
Breakfast options were unremarkable and predictable--make-your-own fresh waffle, sausage gravy & biscuits, and steel-cut oatmeal with a dried cranberries included among the selection of mix-ins, along with several dry cereal choices, flavored yogurts, bagels, toast, and fresh bananas, oranges and apples. Standard beverage offerings--coffee, tea, 2% milk, orange and apple juices--round out the meal. Exciting? Hardly, but no denying that the breakfast is tasty, fresh and nourishing, nonetheless.
All in all, the Alpena Best Western offers their guests top-notch service in a comfortable, clean and convenient setting at a reasonable price. The hotel is in the midst of remodeling and updating, so some sections of it are blocked off, but I wasn't inconvenienced in any manner and the work wasn't disruptive in any way. Should fate ever dictate again that I can't go to my home right outside of Alpena, I know exactly where I'll be staying--and I'll be recommending the Best Western of Alpena, MI, to anyone looking for a nice place to stay while in the area.
