Too large and needs updating

We needed accommodation for three nights and unfortunately the Inn we had selected could only fit us in for two, so we booked The Oaks for our third night. Unfortunately for The Oaks our first accommodation was excellent and similar in price so it is difficult not to make a comparison. On the plus side, The Oaks is an imposing large Victorian building with an impressive front hall with a beautiful stairway and a spectacular stained glass window as its focus. We didn't see or use the leisure facilities I.e. The pool, spa, or gym so cannot comment. But, the journey to our room from reception was like a maze, with stairways going up and down - and no lift! Our room was a little small, with twin beds, and a little on the dark side. I think it may have been recently painted as it smelt of paint, but it looked like they had painted the ascent wall without cleaning it first and the skirting was quite dirty and dusty. The beds were comfortable but the bathroom was in desperate need of an update. Old pink tiles made worse by blue lighting. This meant you could not see properly in the mirror to shave or apply make up. There was a small light over the bathroom mirror but it didn't work and the tv control battery didn't work. At £85 a night it wasn't cheap. breakfast was very uninspiring. Limited choice, especially as I don't eat a cooked breakfast. So limited packet cereal, only one choice of fruit (tinned grapefruit) yoghurt in a bowl that was nearly empty and sliced bread for toast. Hardly worth £10.
There had been a wedding on the day we arrived and we saw that the hotel has an extensive programme of events I.e. 80s nights and tribute bands, so I guess this is there main market - but as a hotel as a destination of choice - forget it. less
