This is a beautiful old Grade II listed building, but with a hideous modern red brick extension built on to the front. Some pictures of the hotel are cropped so you can't see the extension. The brick colour and the design just don't match. Strangely, it's a hotel that looks better from the back than the front. It's just outside Grimsby, next to a garden centre with lots of parking and free wifi.
My room was - guess where - in the extension at the front. There lock on the door was a bit loose (room 40) and rattled. My room was a good size and there were lots of complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. It's hard to judge other rooms, as this is a room for people with disabilities.
Heading to the bar, a friendly barman poured a decent pint of Churchill real ale. I always appreciate a hotel bar that serves real ale. In the restaurant staff were helpful. The chowder soup was fine. Mains were served on big wooden slabs - maybe the kitchen had run out of plates? I had white fish, which was good, but tricky to scrape up the sauce on a chunk of wood. There is a reason for plates. Overall a good dinner though.
At breakfast the next morning, the fresh fruit platter was a bit thin when I arrived. There were yoghurts on offer. Poached eggs were good. Bacon rather undercooked.
This is a decent hotel and my colleagues told me the hotel had been very helpful in preparing food to order for some late arrivals. Such a shame about the architecture though. less
