fair value but room for improvement

We stayed overnight on our way home. Right off I75 basically, next to a McDonalds and on the other side of the highway from an outlet mall. I opted for this hotel based on past experiences with BW. We were not aware of reviews though I did notice the Tripdvisor badge proudly displayed at the entranceway and this usually provides some assurance that it's a better than average place.
The room (second floor) was reasonably clean but there was a slight odour masked by air fresheners. Pets? Wasn't terrible but noticeable. It might be nitpicking but hotels should periodically do a thorough cleaning i.e pull the fridge and really get at the areas by-passed by daily cleaning, I could draw a line in the dust between the fridge and the unit it sat in, Television did not work (no or weak signal message). Beds were comfortable, bedding and towels fresh and decent quality.
The real let down was the wifi. We have different devices (Android, iOS, Windows) but while signal strength was ok we could not maintain a connection good enough to rely on for more than a few minutes. I eventually watched an event on my cellphone that I'd been expecting to watch on my laptop.
In fairness, we did not bring mention our issues to the front desk until checkout the next day. I'm sure they would have addressed the TV problem at least though when it comes to wifi my experience is that they're reliant on tech support that is off-site and can't do much in the immediate term to help. Also in fairness, the pleasant front desk staff seemed surprised when I mentioned it in the morning at check out. She said they pride themselves on having the best wifi service in the area. Perhaps we were just unlucky.
Breakfast; the typical complimentary offerings but better than average.
Security; I used the side exits several times. The first time I discovered I couldn't get back in and when I entered at the front and mentioned to the front desk he explained the card mechanism needed a new battery. Thereafter I discovered (at different times) pebbles were placed in the door frames to keep them from closing/locking. This is not the hotels fault per se, and in fact at another point I used the stairs only disturb a fellow sitting on the landing with a bottle in hand. A guest I presume. Not serious matters I suppose but left room for doubts about security,
I will say the staff I encountered all seemed pleasant and helpful. * and my son thought the pancake machine was quite something. less
