This was our second stay at The Monkbar Hotel since its recent refurbishment. We were allocated a regular double bedroom on the first floor overlooking a quiet courtyard for our two night break which included a full Yorkshire breakfast and £60 towards an evening meal in their restaurant. We have stayed in many different hotels and guest houses in York recently and this is easily our favourite and represents excellent value for money for its smart accommodation, superb customer service and surprisingly good food!
All bedrooms have recently been refurbished and provide very comfortable beds, large flat screen TV's, good quality toiletries, superb showers/baths, desk, armchair, coffee making facilities, free wifi access, etc.
All staff, without exception, are very friendly, courteous and cooperative and helpful and they do everything possible to meet your requests where possible and make your stay a truly pleasant and positive experience.
The self service breakfast is really fantastic and provides a combination of everything you could possibly desire from a continental and full Yorkshire breakfast. The buffet provides an extensive range of cereals, fresh fruits, prepared fruit Platters/salads, cooked items, yogurts, breads, etc with a comprehensive choice of other supplements that can be cooked to order. The evening meal menu is equally impressive and the quality of cooking from the kitchen team is really fantastic. My crispy pigs cheek starter was a revelation, my main course of rib eye steak with all the trimmings was tthe best I've ever had, and my deconstructed apple pie desert with milk curds, red currents and spices was superb, as was the triple expresso I had to follow this. This restaurant is likely to become very popular as its reputation for fine food in pleasant surroundings spreads, so make sure you take advantage off it before booking becomes more difficult and the prices increase!
The public rooms have also been refurbished and are very comfortable also. There is a pleasant central courtyard in the hotel and all areas are maintained to a high standard in this well managed establishment in an excellent central location within a short walk the Minster and city centre. We will certainly be looking forward to staying here again on our next trip to York. This hotel certainly deserves to flourish and puts many other more expensive establishments to shame. Well done to all who work at the Monkbar Hotel!
