3 Day, Weekend Stay.
The Best Western Monkbar, is extremely well appointed for visiting York. I had contacted them earlier in the week before our stay took place. Requesting a quiet room. We arrived very tired after the journey being extra long, due to bad weather, where we paid extra for parking and breakfast. And told where are room was. Which we then went too this was number 63, in the old part of the building.
I was a little disappointed as the room is rather on the small side, but it was very clean & tidy and fitted the bill - so I thought. As we had asked for a quiet one. We rested for a short time. I then asked for an ironing board and iron as they were not already in the room. They arrived very quickly. We then left to go out for dinner. We arrived back later that evening rather tired, after just a long day.
And went to bed, my husband plugged up his phone, and I said I would use the socket on my side of the bed, only to find there wasn't one. There was only one, in the entire room. Which really surprised us. Not very good for a four star hotel I thought. But then went to bed, but could not sleep, it was very quiet, but the concrete bed and matching pillows did not really help, I ended up rolling the bath towels into a sort of pillow, but my husband woke with an extremely stiff neck. We got up rather early after a very bad night, in fact the worse I have ever had on any hotel. And I was not pleased. I used the iron and ironing board, with the only socket, but had to move furniture with which to do so, and when doing this, my husband could not get into the bathroom until I moved. If I used the chair at the dressing table, you had to climb over the bed, as there is no room to even squeeze past.
As you can imagine, this is not quite the stay I had wanted for us, so before breakfast we went to reception to complain, we spoke with Matthew one of the managers, whom apologised and said he had never had complaints before! But did tell us that would we could not be moved as they were fully booked for the Saturday night, but could move us on the Sunday if we wished. But would also offer us free breaksfast for the duration of our stay. And would also look into a reduced room rate. So we accepted. We did receive new pillow, which were much better. And enjoyed York and its sights and people to the full. It truly is a wonderful place and we love it as much as we ever did.
When we left, they did give us a refunded, for the breakfasts, but have said that we will receive an online refund of 1 night. Which we have accepted, but have yet to see.
But this did take a second visit back to reception, as they had not given us back the correct amount. But I would have liked somebody to have approached us, at some stage during our stay, or perhaps left a note in our room asking if everything was ok, but this never happened.
And we didn't bother asking to move again, due to all our clothes etc having to be moved again.
We would go back, but I would look at other hotels first, before choosing this one again. Room 63 should really be a single room, but companies get greedy.
If we had wanted a room that small, we would have stayed in a caravan! less
