We have stayed here every year for at least 6 years for the Ebor races the hotel has increased its prices every year without increasing its level of service or facilities.
Refurbishment has been going on now for over a year but amounts to very little as far as the guest is concerned.
The rooms are ok if you pay for one of the more expensive ones, the one we stayed in had been redecorated and refurnished in very modern colours and was OK but incredibly warm yet air on did not feature in the refurbishment. The bathroom was the original size which wasn't big, it had too been refitted and decorated but the toilet seat said it all - it must have cost no more than £1, the cheapest thin plastic affair one could find! Maybe I'm being unfair and they buy these so they can change them for each guest, but I doubt it.
Breakfast involved a queue for a table and seemed to take quite a while to get hot drinks & toast delivered to the table, the buffet breakfast was reasonable.
The bar had absolutely no character about it at all, the designer needs to be sacked! Not the place to enjoy a nightcap.
All in all this was the last time we will stay at this place, there are far better hotels in York so why put up with poor service and a characterless stay in a lovely city?
Car parking is reasonable but a short walk away but the discounted price of £5 only covers you until 10.00am which hardly gives you time for a leisurely breakfast but I suppose it does make you vacate your room early for the convenience of the hotel.
When we stopped here in 2014 and complained about the lack of facilities due to the refurb without a corresponding reduction in price we were told that next year our stay would be fabulous - it wasn't! less
