My wife and I and the group we travel with when we visit Door County have stayed at this hotel many times over the years and have had rooms with a musty smell a couple times before but our most recent visit was by far the worst and probably our last.
We were given room #150 on the first floor right behind the check in desk and noticed a damp musty odor as soon as we entered the room and found that even the mattress felt damp while lying on the bed. I told the manager about it and he thought it was possibly caused by the room air conditioner and said it might help if we shut it off and leave the windows open for awhile. Since there were no other rooms available as the hotel was full we tried that and also used some air freshener in the room and after several hours the odor was at least tolerable.
The real problem we had with this hotel was found the next morning when we awoke and noticed some kind of black lint type specs all over the bottom on one side of the bed sheets like lint you might get from sleeping with socks on however my wife or myself didnt sleep with socks on or anything else that color that could explain what caused it so clearly it was some type of debris left behind from the previous guests which obviously means the bed sheets were never washed before we were given this room and I find that totally unacceptable for any hotel ! !
I contacted the hotel manager and he couldn't identify what this stuff was but apologized and promised to take care of it right away and had all the bedding replaced so at least the bed was clean and dry for the 2nd night of our stay.
Even though the problem was taken care of right away it should have never happened in the first place and this incident has left my wife and I and the entire group of friends we travel with very uneasy about ever staying at this hotel again.
The musty smell in the room was bad enough but being given a room with dirty bed sheets took an already uncomfortable experience to an entirely new level and is also against the law in Wisconsin.
After all this the hotel offered only a 20% discount for one of the two nights we stayed and in a follow up email the hotel manager told me in an exact word for word, probably copied and pasted apology response they give to everyone that complains that they were sorry for not exceeding my expectations and that my comments would help them to better serve their guests in the future. Seriously your guests in the future, what ever happened to taking care of the guests you have right now so you actually have guests in the future ??
I informed Best Western Corp. of this problem and they didnt seem overly concerned or maybe they are just used to these type of complaints about this hotel as their response to me was they will let the hotel know that I had a bad experience, seriously thats it? less
