Couldn’t fault the staff. All polite. Professional and engaging from check in, to morning and night service.
COVID-19 measures were excellent - always on hand to clean tables once guests had left tables etc, and appropriate screens and masks In place.
Nice breakfast - full English or continental on offer
Great views of the sea from the gardens or terrace (preferred the terrace myself).
However, as good as these points were, the hotels seems to be stuck in the 80’s, if not earlier! Decor, bathrooms, showers which are pretty pointless, interior, everything about it is very dated.
At £60 a night I maybe shouldn’t moan, but then on top of that you pay for breakfast £10 pppn, and drinks were almost £6 a pint (or bottle cider in my case) costs soon mounted up
I was in a single room on the first floor right by the communal entrance (top of the stairs) and whilst it was quiet when no one was about you could hear every one entering through that door, not helped by the creaky floorboards!
Free parking is a bonus - the hotel I was at before this one was £10 pn and you weren’t guaranteed a spot but here there was plenty of option and it was free.
Mattresses felt old, and the pillows almost non existent.
Location wise, depending on how far you want to be from things, is in reaching distance by foot to Paignton (less than a mile away), approx 1.5mile away from the harbour, Torre Abbey is also close by.
Had I been reviewing the staff and views it would be 5* without doubt. But for me there are just too many negatives, with the noise and decor being the main points less
