A one night stay. Must stay longer next time.
We were headed for the Eurotunnel from Devon and needed a one night stopover to break the journey. As I first met my wife in Eastbourne 30 years ago, it seemed a good place to stop for a nostalgic visit.
I wanted a seafront hotel and because I had Tesco vouchers I could use for Best Western hotels, The Lansdowne Hotel fitted the bill perfectly.
I booked one of their sea view rooms and our room on the first floor met all our expectations. Mind you, the room numbering appears a bit haphazard which made finding the room a bit of an adventure
The room was large with a wonderfully wide bay window affording great views over the full seafront. Whilst there is no air conditioning, the large windows will open wide to give plenty of fresh air, and in fact open right up, so you can walk on to the balcony.
The room was clean, had a trouser press, a kettle with tea & coffee (why do hotels still provide a cup & saucer instead of a mug, as it means housekeeping have two things to wash up each time instead of just one), good strong shower, pleasant toiletries and plenty of space for storing clothing. Oh, and free wifi !
Our only slightly minus point was check in, which was a little odd from our point of view. We arrived at 8:30pm and were greeted by the lady at reception. After giving our name, the next exchange was simply, do you want a newspaper and early morning call. After declining both, she advised us where breakfast would be and how we could find our rooms and that was it. I might have expected some further information such as the hotel parking facilities, or enquire whether we had managed to find somewhere nearby to park, where the bar was and that though the restaurant had just closed, snacks were still available in the bar for a short time, but no. Oh well.
In the morning, there was an excellent choice of hot and cold fare for breakfast, and I must especially mention the lovely thick slices of bacon. Also deserving of a mention were the smiling and helpful breakfast staff, thank you for our good start to the day.
All in all, a very pleasant stay, albeit just for one night and we would happily stay again, maybe for a few days longer next time. less
