There's a reason so many reviews mention the location of this hotel...that really is most of what it has going for it. I had a lot of trouble choosing an Oslo hotel. Nearly every one had a lot of complaints! With that in mind, I chose the BW Karl Johan because of it's reasonable price and good location. When we arrived, I thought I had made a huge mistake. We were assigned to room 516 on the top floor. The room was dark, looked dirty (old, dusty carpet), had a chair that was visibly worn and there was a disgusting musty smell coming from the drain in the bathroom. A maintenance person came up, shrugged his shoulders and poured something down the drain. Then I complained to reception and the person there was quite nice. She allowed me to check three other rooms. They were all MUCH better than the rooms on the 5th floor - still run-down, but not smelly. We ended up with room 426, which I highly recommend if you are traveling with a kid. The sitting area was in a separate room from the bedroom, which gave us lots of extra space. The windows on the lower floors are much larger, so rooms are brighter. And the bedroom had wood floors instead of carpet, so it seemed a little cleaner. The best part was the heated floor in the bathroom. The hotel really needs a renovation. The only toiletries provided were soap and shampoo in dispensers. The carpet really needs a good cleaning and the rooms have very little storage...particularly given that they're decent size for a European hotel. Some shelving and drawers would be a big help. I've never been in a hotel that had so much space yet still no place to put anything. The breakfast was quite good. Nice selection including cereals, eggs, breads, meats, cheeses, etc. The main thing lacking was fresh fruit. There was a fruit bowl, but other than that they just had one thing out each day -- watermelon one day and some other kind of (not-quite-ripe) melon the other days. All in all it turned out to be a fine stay with our second room. Oh, another thing to note is that several rooms face Karl Johan Gate. While the view is nice, it is a busy and noisy street. Our second room (426) faced two back courtyards...no view, but quiet and we didn't have to worry about keeping the windows open at night. less
