This was our first visit to Takayama and it's fair to say we fell in love with it and its surrounds.
We were also really pleased with the Best Western as our base for the three nights. No, it's not a hotel with a lot of 'wow' factor, but nor would you expect it to be for the price you are paying. However, it's a really comfortable hotel where you will feel very much at home during your stay.
The location is perfect, about 100 metres from the train station. Everything in Takayama is accessible on foot, so no problems there. On two of our three nights, the restaurants where we had dinner were less than 200 metres away from the hotel, and were both amazing.
For western toursits, the room will seem small, but by Japanese standards it's what you would expect. Other than size, the room is very comfortable.
We had breakfast provided with our room and quite enjoyed it. The buffet is not huge, but it's more than enough to fuel you up for your morning of sightseeing in this lovely town and the quality is good.
Finally, as with almost everybody in Japan, the staff at this hotel are very friendly and welcoming. In particular the lady who runs the breakfast buffet was delightful.
I'm not sure our travels will return us to Takayama again, but if they do, we'd certainly stay at this hotel again. less
