As the title suggests, we moved rooms after the first night. The first room we were given smelt of cigarette smoke. This seemed to be coming from the next door room, it was horrible. First thing the next morning we spoke to reception, assuming we had somehow been allocated a smoking room. We were told the hotel is entirely non-smoking, but the very helpful lady on reception immediately offered us a change of room anyway. Well, what a difference! I'm fairly sure it wasn't an upgrade as the room was the same size and very similar in layout, but it was so much nicer, brighter, lighter and far, far less cigarette smoke (we did get a tiny bit, but not enough to worry about this time). In the second room the air con was switched on, it was off in the first room (it was March and many hotels seem not to turn their air con on until much later in the year). This may have been because the second room faced the road and it was therefore too noisy to sleep with the window open. We definitely needed either air con or an open window, the rooms, both of them, were far too warm for us otherwise. If you prefer a warmer room, you'd be fine.
The hotel is a bit dated in its decor, well the two rooms we stayed in were, but it is clean and the location is great. Easy to walk to the centre and with loads of good restaurants on the doorstep. My main commendation though is the staff, they were wonderful, all of them. We would stay here again, but we'd be choosy about the room we were given. less
