Best Western Harbour Point in St. Ignace was a great place to stay on a budget with kids with plans to visit Mackinac Island.
Admittedly, we didn’t research hotel details carefully before booking. I didn’t realize that the doors to your room were more motel style, in that each door opens to outside, not within a hotel. Also, there are a few separate buildings. The main picture shows a hotel right on the water. Our building was back a little farther, but still had a beautiful view of Lake Huron from our balcony. Every room had a small but lovely balcony with two comfortable lawn chairs. It was great to sit out there in the morning and evenings to enjoy the view. The room was spacious and seemed newly renovated and clean.
Other amenities we enjoyed were the pools, one inside and one outside. There was also a playground and ample grassy areas for the kids to safely run around. The property had access to Lake Huron, although not a sandy beach for sunbathing. There was some sand, but also rocks and pebbles. The view was amazing though! It was really nice to walk the beach at night. The hotel also had an evening campfire and marshmallows for roasting!
The free breakfast was good; scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits, yogurt, a few dry cereal options, muffins, pastries, 2% or skim milk in coffee carafes, juice from dispenser, coffee. One problem though were wasps in the breakfast area. The first day we sat outside on an enclosed patio and repeatedly had wasps bothering us. The second day we sat inside, hoping to avoid them, but the wasps were in there too. The staff was very kind in trying to help and killed several with fly swatters or towels, but they still bothered us and scared our kids. I’m guessing there’s a wasp nest nearby that needs to be found and removed.
We used Shepler’s ferry, which was just a short distance from the hotel to visit Mackinac Island. The hotel had a free shuttle or they had free parking for those just visiting for the day. It was a clean boat and nice ride. When returning home, the ferry line for St. Ignace boats was very short. I noticed the line for Mackinaw City was really long. It could’ve been a coincidence, but I wonder if fewer people stay in St. Ignace compared to Mackinaw city when visiting Mackinac Island? It was convenient for us, and I definitely recommend this hotel! If we visit the area again, I’d stay here again. less
