Booked this as a treat for our 35th wedding anniversary but found the whole experience very disappointing from the check in to the check out.
Poor directions meant we walked all round the hotel to find our room and, as the lift was out of order, we walked up quite a steep flight of stairs which would have been difficult for anyone with mobility issues.
Despite the weather being extremely cold the radiator was off and the room was cold.
Booked as a double room it was surprising that there were only 3 pillows and one cushion on the bed and only one hand and bath towel in the bathroom, (there was an additional wrapped pillow and another set of towels in the wardrobe) and only one sachet of hot chocolate. (No sweeteners)
There was no information whatsoever about the hotel or local area in the room.
A deciding factor in booking the hotel was that it had a pool, but the day before our arrival I received an email saying the pool was closed. Consequently we didn't take swimming gear but it seemed that it was actually open.
The meal was disappointing and extremely overpriced. I had booked a table in the restaurant the day before we arrived and was told there was only a fixed price menu at £23.95 for two courses or £26.95 for three, no al a carte. Upon arrival a note was produced with instructions to tell us the cost was now £27.95 and £30.95.
The restaurant was very brightly lit and had no ambience. The menu choice was poor with only two choices for desert. Two out of the three starters came with pickled vegetables. Had we had any information about the food options available we may well have opted to eat elsewhere, (As stated we had no information in our room and I didn't see any information about bar or restaurant food displayed in reception).
The portion sizes for the starter and main were tiny - for my main I had a small piece of fish with about four very thin slices of sauteed potato and a few peas and as the desert options were not to my taste (sticky toffee pudding with ice cream or banana bread with ice cream) I did not feel that my meal was adequate. We weren't offered coffee. The service was rushed. The people behind us actually asked for a 10 minute delay before their sweet was served.
We decided to have a drink after our meal. To get to the main bar you had to go out of the hotel and along a pavement (not ideal with a dress and heels on a freezing night) however it was not inviting being very brightly lit, with no comfortable chairs to relax in. We chose to go in the residents lounge instead but unfortunately it was not particularly warm, very brightly lit, with no background music and had no ambience whatsoever .We had expected to enjoy an after dinner drink with cosy log fires and a relaxed warm atmosphere but that was not the case so we retired to our room.
The breakfast experience was very poor. There was no orange juice, The service was chaotic. It took us 50 minutes to get what was a very mediocre full english (with no beans) which only came when we asked for it - surely one of the three staff should have noticed we had not got any food.. The toast was cold and we had to ask for another pot of coffee as we waited so long the first one went cold.
Upon check-out our bill was incorrect - we had been charged for two, three course dinners instead of one three course and one two.
All in all not the cosy, romantic break we had hoped for. less
