I had my doubts when my wife told me we were staying at a BestWestern hotel, The Gatehouse Hotel has allayed all my fears.
This small hotel (16 rooms) located on the outskirts of Ipswich has the feel of a country house hotel.
You are warmly welcomed by a friendly very helpful staff which nothing is too much trouble to make your stay trouble free.
Our room on the ground floor had been refurbished recently as the carpet still had a new smell to it.
The room was spacious, opened onto a courtyard and proved to be very quiet.
The beds were comfortable, not too soft.
Breakfast was of a good standard with an excellent cooked to order offering.
Dinner was of a very good standard using good quality where ever possible local produce.
The chefs have a passion for the food they prepare which shows in the end product.
The portions are generous and trying to eat a 3 course option proved a challenge.
What was also a treat was the home made breads that accompanied the home made soups as well as the excellent home made ciabata panini offerings.
This hotel is worth seeking out and we will make it our stop on our regular visits to Suffolk.
Should this hotel be fully booked the same owners have a 34 room Best Western hotel at Claydon, 10 minutes drive away. The staff at these hotels are rotated on a regular basis and maintain standards. less
