We have just returned from a short break with my 86 year old dad and on the whole this hotel suited us perfectly. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the setting is lovely. When we arrived, it became apparent that my dad would not manage the shower over the bath as he didn't feel very confident climbing in with nothing to hold onto. I had not thought to ask for a room with a walk in shower which was a mistake on my part. However, when we spoke to the receptionist she bent over backwards to find us a suitable alternative. The breakfast was good and plentiful - some mornings buffet style and some cooked to order depending, I think, on how many guests there were. The breakfast staff were particularly friendly and could not do enough for us. On the down side, I agree with certain comments from previous reviews. The Wi Fi is very temperamental and the TVs are antiquated. There is refurbishment going on at the moment so hopefully these problems will be addressed. The outside seating area is lovely and, as we had glorious weather, we made full use of it for an early evening drink after returning from our various outings.
The hotel is a great base from which to explore Northumberland's many attractions e.g Beamish, Hadrians Wall and Alnwick.
All in all this is a good hotel and we would definitely return. less
