This hotel IS in urgent need of a refurb but generally it is ok and well worth a visit. The staff are very good particularly in the restaurant who always seem busy but always smile. Reception staff are ok, nothing special as one of them was abit pompous when we booked in as she told us our room was not ready, despite it being just after 3pm. The room we had was very clean but very dated, but the bed was huge and very comfy, the television in the sitting room was old and the signal, poor quality. I am sure this will be changed when they get around to refurnishing that room. There is no air con, which would be much needed in the hot summer months.
The food in the restaurant is lovely. We had dinner in their on Friday evening and the food was hot, tasty and well presented, although portions are small and you have to pay extra for veg and potatoes as most of the dishes are only meat/fish based .However breakfast is only standard/average to say the least. It is a buffet type, but the staff are so busy that the heated trolley is hardly restocked and the food in it is cool, rather than hot. Poached and fried eggs are available on request, I would liked to have had the scrambled egg also made to order as the offering in the heated trolley looked pale and solid. Yesterday the plates were hot, today they were cool. A small moan but things like this set you up for the day and should be easy to sort out.
The best bit of the hotel are the leisure facilities. The pool is small but is warm and the changing area is clean and towels available free of charge. There are also foam floats to use for anyone who needs one. There is also a sauna and Jacuzzi. Upstairs there is a gym. You need a £1 for the locker.
The hotel has a generous sized car park but....on both Friday and Saturday the bit near the hotel entrance was full of cycling team van/cars and their equipment as there was a cycling competition locally over the weekend. I do think they should have been asked to park round the back and let the rest of the hotel residents have the spaces at the front. The cyclists did seem to get preferential treatment particularly when we were told on Friday that we were unable to eat in the restaurant until 8pm at the earliest as they were busy. When we duly arrived at 8pm, the cyclists were in an adjacent room and busy eating! So in fact the restaurant wasn't busy there was just a party next door. The answer..... get in extra staff to just cover that room. Not difficult!
So in conclusion, good leisure facilities, spectacular views, clean and pleasant hotel. It is not disability friendly as there are lots of steps. I would like to return when the refurb is complete as I feel the 3 star could be easily raised to 4 with abit of effort and an eye on the little things made better. less
