Looking for a good quality one night stopover in Bangkok, near the airport and reasonably priced, led me to the BW Amaranth. Certainly the airport transfer service was up to expectations although the 15 min journey was a little longer than some websites implied. It's not as close to the airport as I envisaged but no deal breaker.
On checking in I was surprised to be asked for my credit card to pay a 2000 baht deposit to cover things like minibar usage and any meals etc. It is common practice in many hotels to be asked for your passport and maybe your credit card but not for a prepaid deposit. Rather than put more money in the coffers of the banks through credit card charges, I gave them cash (which was returned on my departure, no problem). Then the frustrations continued - a faulty room key and perplexing door lock system, bemusement trying to figure out how the bathroom fittings worked, and the security system used in the lifts. Unfortunately, and surprisingly, the Porter didn't hang around to explain these things and other functions in the room - he didn't get a tip! Now these issues probably sound pretty minuscule but after a 12 hour flight, you don't need them. OK, the room was actually pretty good, clean, and the shower (once I figured out how it worked) was great, bed was comfortable but the aircon was a little noisy. In the morning a good buffet breakfast was on offer after which I had time to do a quick tour around the place - nice looking pool, gym, well maintained gardens and forecourt area etc . The checking out process was efficient and friendly and transfer service back to the airport was spot on. Would I stay here again? - for a one or two night stopover, probably yes. less
