Some 50 years on from the actual events, Iain Softley and Stephen Jeffreys' Backbeat recreates the birth of the Beatles and, specifically, the band's first bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, who fell in love with German photographer Astrid Kirchher. David Levraux directs.
Softley's film Backbeat was made in 1994, and this stage version was given its world premiére at Glasgow's Citizen Theatre last year.
Follow John, Paul, George, Stuart and Pete Best as they head from Liverpool to Hamburg to play covers such as Twist & Shout, Rock & Roll Music, Long Tall Sally, Please Mr Postman and Money at the seedy Reeperbahn. Stuart died, aged 22, the year The Beatles signed with Brian Epstein and released their first single on Parlophone, Love Me Do.
Jeffreys' previous credits include The Libertine filmed with Johnny Depp.
