Despite man's bipedal state, stubborn fights with gravity have proliferated throughout history. The International Worthing Birdman is a splendid example of human beings defying their natural state by swooping off a pier... and crashing inelegantly into the sea.

Dressing for the occasion is obligatory: Mary Poppins, Superwoman, Peter Pan and the infamous "Naked John" have all wowed the crowds over the years with their spectacular, albeit doomed, aviation attempts. The winner leaves with a hefty money prize, and the competition also raises money for worthwhile causes.
