The vibrant Brecon Jazz festival takes over this mid-Wales market town each year. The programme features jazz from trad to free, with performances at Theatre Brycheiniog, the Cathedral and other venues around town.

After a stripped-down edition in 2009, the event is reborn this year with a full line-up of quality artists. High points range from veteran South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela and clarinet star Acker Bilk to Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club with Omara Portuondo, virtuoso vocalist Jacqui Dankworth, French trumpeter Erik Truffaz and the explosive Neil Cowley Trio.

Sunday's carnival jazz parade takes proceedings on to the town's streets.
