Allendale in Northumberland has an interesting way of seeing in the New Year. Men dress up, balance flaming whisky barrels filled with hot tar on their heads, then toss them onto a bonfire...
Keeping a pagan ceremony alive, the locals hold a procession through the town centre. Half an hour before New Year the flaming barrels (weighing up to 15kg) are tossed onto the unlit bonfire, setting it ablaze. On the stroke of midnight, everyone joins hands to dance around the fire and sing Auld Lang Syne.
