The ruins of Dunnottar Castle, a dramatic cliff-top fortress, near Stonehaven date back to the fourth century. Look out for the War Memorial on nearby Black Hill, which affords 360-degree views of the castle and bay.
The flat top of this promontory is around three acres in size, just big enough to support this impregnable-looking construction. There is written evidence suggesting that a fortification may have existed here since AD 400 and it is known that both Mary Queen of Scots and James VI of Scotland visited in the 16th century.
