In the heart of Alnwick, Bailiffgate Museum is an interactive museum that brings the history of the region to life. Visitors can play a medieval computer game, try on armour or even plunge into a replica Northumbrian mine.
The permanent galleries look at different facets of Alnwick life through the ages, from the great early Christian era of St Cuthbert, via the post-Roman invasions and Viking incursions and the time of castle building to the lawless age of the Border Reivers, when the whole of the region was outlaw country. In the modern age came industry and railways and Alnwick's long history of trade and commerce is illustrated by displays about the 1000-year old Freemen of Alnwick.
There is also space in the museum for temporary exhibitions, meaning that regular visitors always have something new to see.
