Edinburgh has an extinct volcano at its heart. Rising above Holyroodhouse Palace, Arthur's Seat is an easy get-away from the bustle of the centre. Climb the well-trodden paths to take in the panoramic city views.
Even higher than the volcanic plug atop which Edinburgh Castle sits, Arthur's Seat stands prominently south of the city in Holyrood Park. It rises 250 metres (823 feet) above sea level and, because of its shape at certain angles, is also known as the Lion's Head. It remains a popular walk for Edinburgh residents and visitors alike, passing as it does the impressive Salisbury Crags.
