Abbotsford was once the home of 19th-century novelist Sir Walter Scott. Today, visitors can explore the house and grounds and view Scott's extensive collections of historic relics, weapons & armour, and rare books.

The Scottish Borders Walking Festival offers adventurous types the chance to explore the area's rich wildlife, geology, history and archaeology. Based around a different Border town every year, around 50 trails cater to various fitness levels and interests. Hawick is the venue for 2011.

Reputed to be Scotland's largest inhabited castle, Floors Castle on the River Tweed is the seat of the Dukes of Roxburghe. Located in the Scottish Borders, the castle, as it is today, was fashioned from a tower house in 1721.

Take time out at a beautiful Tibetan retreat in the Scottish countryside. Founded in 1967, Kagyu Samye Ling ("place beyond concept") was the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre to be established in the West. It continues to attract hundreds of visitors every year - Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
