Ripley Castle, North Yorkshire

Step out of your Harrogate hotel and enjoy the spa waters, be dazzled by the award-winning botanical gardens’ rose displays or discover the priests’ hidey-hole at Ripley Castle.

Historic Harrogate

The joy of visiting Harrogate’s most historic spot is that you get a nice rub down while you’re at it. The Harrogate Turkish Baths attracted European royals in its Victorian heyday and its grand arched roof, dazzling Arabic tiles and listed loo make you feel rather regal too.

Art and museums in Harrogate

Pinch your nose in the Royal Pump Room Museum where you can taste the sulphurous waters. The Mercer Art Gallery is home to more than 2,000 pieces of 19th- and 20th-century art and lovely Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens has its own fascinating gardening museum.

Quirky things to do in Harrogate

Nearby Ripley Castle is where the Ingilby family has lived for 700 years. A tour fills you in on the part this family played in history, its members – Gunpowder plotters, Henry VIII cohorts and eminent courtiers – sort of real-life Blackadders of their age.

Events in Harrogate

The Harrogate Spring Flower Show in April is a gardener’s delight but there is much more than dazzling daffs near your Harrogate hotel. Cookery exhibitions, a food marquee stuffed with local delicacies and children’s hunts entice the whole family. The Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival with the likes of Ian Rankin and Christopher Brookmyre delivers killer sessions on how to write sleuth stories.
