Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum
The Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum examines what life was like on the Roman frontier at Hadrian's Wall, combining finds unearthed at the fort with interactive computer displays.
In AD122, the Emperor Hadrian ordered a mighty frontier system to be built across Britain to defend the Roman Empire from the Barbarians to the north. Here at the museum, 2000 years of history unfolds as amazing displays chronicle the changes at Wallsend from Roman times to the present day. Tracing the history of the site following the end of Roman rule, other displays explore the coal mining and shipbuilding industries for which Wallsend is famous.
As well as having the chance to explore the fort's buildings, including the commanding officer's house, headquarters, the hospital and soldiers' barracks, visitors can take a lift to the top of the spectacular 35 metre-high viewing tower. A walk around the fort's excavated ruins explores the original remains of the wall, alongside a reconstructed section showing how the wall would have looked 1800 years ago.
The museum runs a programme of events throughout the year - in particular, fun and family activities during all school holidays. For further information, please contact the venue or check the website before you visit.
