City of Inverness Highland Games
Inverness Highland Games returned after over 50 years back to Northern Meeting Park in 2011. One of Scotland's traditional games, first held in 1822, it's a compendium of what can be done in kilts, from "heavy" sports to Scottish dancing and bagpiping.
As capital of the Highlands, Inverness puts on a great show. Tartan-clad competitors sweat profusely as they hurl large objects as far as they can: shots (which are putt), hammers (which are thrown) and cabers (which are tossed). Then there are the weights, heavier than either the shot or the hammer (16lb or 22lb): 28lb weights thrown over distance and 56lb weights thrown for height.
More colourful and easier on the eye are the Scottish dancing events and the massed pipe bands.
