Shaolin Training is not for the faint-hearted. Best known for breaking concrete blocks with their heads, the monks at this temple in North London offer you a glimpse inside their world as well as the chance to build your strength of both body and mind.

The roots of the ancient art of Kung Fu originate in the 1500 year old Ch'an Buddhist Shaolin Temple in Henan Province, China. In 1998, the clear fascination of visitors from the West prompted the Abbot, The Venerable Shi Yong Xin to send monk Shifu Shi Yanzi to London. He hoped a centre could be developed through which Shaolin's ancient culture could be made accessible to a greater number of people.

Shifu Shi Yanzi spent 15 years at the Shaolin Temple training, studying and bending his body backwards in extraordinary feats of suppleness and strength. He specialised in Cha'an Buddhism, as well as the advanced skills of San Shou freestyle Kung Fu. The centre he opened in London joins the Temple in New York as one of only two branches in the world authorised by the Abbot to be called a Shaolin Temple.

Shaolin Kung Fu differs from other forms of martial arts by having at its heart the teachings of Ch'an Buddhism, which students must study if they wish to attain the true spirit of Kung Fu. At the UK Shaolin Temple, a broad spectrum of Shaolin is taught, including meditation, stretching and Qi Gong. All of these are believed to lead to better health, well being, concentration and co-ordination. There are also classes in Mandarin and calligraphy.
