Freud Museum
Number 20 Maresfield Gardens, Hampstead, was Sigmund Freud's last home after he fled Austria following the German invasion of 1938. Today the house is maintained as a museum, with holdings including Freud's library, his collection of antiquities, and, of course, his famous rug-covered couch.
Like Marx before him, Freud had mixed feelings about England. But despite his complaints about the "fog and rain, drunkenness and conservatism" (no change there then), he found the city welcoming enough. His daughter Anna, a celebrated analyst herself, kept Maresfield Gardens on as the family home until her death in 1982; Freud's study and library were kept preserved as they were when he died.
As well as its permanent collection, the museum has a well-stocked bookshop and also stages regular seminars, conferences and exhibitions. The self-guided tour also offers a chance to see a couple of interesting videos of Freud and his family - one of which is narrated by Anna herself.
