Lam Rim Centre
Tucked within an unassuming building, Bristol's Lam Rim Centre offers a welcome respite from hectic city life and you really don't have to be a Buddhist to benefit from the meditation courses it offers. Nor indeed, to enjoy the countless complementary therapies that its Health Centre provides.
The centre has grown from humble beginnings to become a buzzing hive of activity. Originally established in 1988 by a charitable trust as a place for a local Buddhist group to get together, it now encompasses a whole lot more. The original Buddhist group has now grown hugely and occupies the Buddhist Centre on the top floor of the building.
There is an ongoing programme of evening and weekend meetings where you can learn and practice meditation, hear and discuss the Buddha's teachings and perform devotional Buddhist practice. The teachings follow the Tibetan Gelug-pa school under the guidance of spiritual director, Venerable Geshé Damchö Yönten - if you're interested in knowing more about the texts, some are downloadable from the website.
On the ground floor, the Centre for Whole Health offers a wide range of complementary practices - from shiatsu to acupuncture and reflexology. There is a glorious space for the classes they run too - Tai Chi and yoga included. Check out the website to see what's on offer - there'll be something to chill you out on each day of the week.
