Champneys
Set in a magnificent mansion within 170 acres of Hertfordshire parkland on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, just mention the word Champneys and others such as "health" and "pampering" spring to mind.
In 1925 the Manor of Tring fell into the hands of an eccentric naturopath, Stanley Lief, who turned it into a nature cure resort - one of the first in England. Lief had trained in the (then) obscure profession of naturopathy in the USA and although his methods were thought to be odd, he got results. So much so that the reputation of his centre spread across the waters and has continued to do so since then. Now, the name Champneys is almost synonymous with spa.
You can visit for a day, a week or even a year (if money is no object). Staff offer an impressively long menu of treatments for the body, soul and mind. It's up to you what you want to indulge in. Choose from a range of facial treatments, eye treatments, body treatments, hairdressing treatments, complementary and alternative therapies, fitness and sports services, pregnancy treatments....the list goes on.
Needless to say, all the food on offer is delicious and healthy. Those counting every calorie are catered for, so this is a rare place where a tough weight-loss diet can be enjoyed and you can choose to digest on a sunbed.
