Great Coxwell Tithe Barn
The Tithe Barn at Great Coxwell was described by William Morris as "the finest piece of architecture in England...unapproachable in its dignity, as beautiful as a cathedral, yet with no ostentation of the builder's art". It is now open throughout the year for history lovers to lap up.
A stunning example of Gothic architecture, the enormous barn (12m x 40m) was built by the Cistercian Order in the early 1300s. It was used to gather the yearly tithe or rent from the numerous tenants who worked the surrounding land. Every year after the harvest the barn would be stuffed full of sheaves of corn, livestock and wool before the monks carted off the lot to their headquarters at Beaulieu Abbey in the New Forest.
The scale of monastic opulence in early Medieval times is nowhere more clearly demonstrated than in this phenomenal edifice. The roof is as high as any self-respecting cathedral, while the double row of colossal oak beams (each one fashioned from just one tree) supporting it are also impressive.
