Dalí Universe
County Hall Gallery hosts an ongoing display of 500 works by the Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalí. With everything from the famous dripping clock to the Mae West Sofa (where voluptous pouting lips offer themselves as cushions), this display provides yet another exciting addition to the London art scene. Entry ticket also allows access to the Gallery's Picasso exhibition.
The images of Salvador Dali (1904-1989) have become some of the most popular in the world. A self-styled maverick who went to some lengths to make his life as bizarre as his art, he courted publicity with a businesslike brilliance. His art may be seen as alternatively spurious or profound, but it is always unforgettable.
The Dali Universe is organised around three themes - Dreams and Fantasy, Sensuality and Feminity, and Religion and Mythology. The Stratton Foundation draws on its huge collection of Dali Sculptures (the largest in the world) and also shows some particularly fine drawings (the brilliance of Dali's draughtsmanship is unarguable).
On the riverside walkway outside are three further giant sculptures: Space Venus, Space Elephant and The Nobility of Time. The dripping clock, The Profile of Time, is situated around the corner in Jubilee Gardens.
