The Severn Bore
Bore is the rather curious name given to a unique tidal phenomenon. An exceptionally high tide produces a wave so large that it travels upstream within the banks of the nearest river, sometimes for several miles. Favourable conditions for a really big Bore, such as a strong following wind, can produce a wave on the Severn river over two metres high, moving at an average speed of 16 kilometres per hour. The waves attract hundreds of spectators and more excitingly, the daring and intrepid Bore Riders.
The principle months for good Bores are February, March, April and August, September and October on either side of the equinoxes. The Bore Riders Club, established in 1998, has a website packed with information on everything from the best boards to use to tips on relocating your car when you have finished your ride. The all-important timetables are also posted here. The Environment Agency issues a useful annual guide with star ratings for prediction of bore heights.
The challenge to ride the largest river wave in Europe has been taken up on a regular basis since Colonel Churchill made the first recorded attempt in the mid-1950s. Surfboards in hand, the riders enter the river and attempt to stay on top of the wave for as long as possible. The Severn bore has been known to travel over a distance of around 25 miles.
Following the initial bore wave, there is a substantial rise in water level for a further hour or so. Take particular care where you stand to watch the bore and also where you park your vehicle.
Be aware that the timetable only details tides which may result in major bores. Times are approximate and can vary by as much as 30 minutes each way.
