Robert Dover's Cotswold Olimpicks
Started by local barrister Captain Robert Dover in 1612, the Cotswold Olimpicks at Dover's Hill, Chipping Campden attract thousands of visitors each year. Among the events to take place at this unorthodox Olympic-themed event are tug-of-war, obstacle races and shin kicking.
With shin kicking the Olimpicks' most popular event, it goes without saying that this popular local festival isn't entirely serious in intent. Practising a dubious understanding of sportsmanship, two competitors cushion their shins with straw before using steel toe-capped boots to kick the shins of their opponent.
As well as a curious programme of sporting events, the festivities feature a huge bonfire and fireworks display as well as an atmospheric torchlight procession to a Morris dancing performance in Chipping Campden's town square.
