Tropical Bird Pavilion
London Zoo reveals their brand-new tropical bird walk-through to visitors and feathered residents alike. The newly restored Victorian Blackbird Pavilion houses the only collection of hummingbirds in the UK, who buzz harmoniously next to toucans, hornbills and others.
Built in 1883, the Blackbird Pavilion was once home to the zoo's reptiles before being converted into a birdhouse in 1927. The pavilion's original porch is one of the gems of the restoration.
On entering, visitors walk past tropical toucans and hornbills before reaching the Victorian Promenade, where African jacana, trumpeters, hooded pitas and other free-flying species glide above. The path leads onto nectar-feeding species, including sunbirds and the prized collection of hummingbirds. Children's arts and crafts activities incorporating a bird theme take place throughout the five days of the launch.
