Scone Palace
Present-day Scone Palace, although only 200 years old, stands on the site of the medieval abbey and palace where Scotland's kings were crowned for centuries. A replica Stone of Scone (the Stone of Destiny) is on view at the Palace.
Edward I moved the Stone to Westminster Abbey at the end of the 13th century, and it was only returned to Scotland in 1996 to be displayed at Edinburgh Castle.
Once, between 1210 and 1452, the site of Scottish Parliaments (commemorated by a small chapel dedicated by the Third Earl of Mansfield), the current Scone Palace was built in the early 19th century by David Murray, Earl of Mansfield. William Atkinson's Gothic Georgian style cost £60,000 and took nine years to complete.
