Hylands House and Estate
Hylands House is a magnificent Grade II listed property set in an expanse of Essex parkland. Once a red brick Queen Anne style mansion, the house dates back to 1730 and has undergone stages of vast transformation over the years.
Hylands was dramatically modernised and extended by the renowned landscape gardener, Humphry Repton, who gave it the characteristic bright white stucco finish that remains today. The house also famously played an all-important role as headquarters of the SAS during the Second World War.
Adjacent to the house is the recently-restored Stables Centre, converted into a visitor centre with a large gift shop, artist studios, café, information centre and even stabling for heavy horses.
Please note: the house is only open open on Sunday and Monday. Hylands Park is open all year round and also worth a visit for its woodland, peaceful lakes and gardens.
