Sanquhar Riding of the Marches
The "Riding of the Marches" recreates the inspection of Sanquhar burgh boundaries, chronicled in 1730. The climax is on the Saturday closest to 18 August (the anniversary of Sanquhar receiving the Royal Charter) with the march of over 100 horses.
The week also includes a funfair, starting with the 'saching' ceremony on the opening day, called Tolbooth Friday. On the main Saturday, as well as the riding of the marches, the Sanquhar Queen is crowned in the morning, followed by a cavalcade of horses, lorries and bands along the town's High Street around lunchtime.
Following entertainments and massed bands in early evening, there is a torchlight procession along High Street.
