City of London Festival

The pride and joy of London's "Square Mile" are its exquisite guild halls and churches, which resonate every summer during the City of London Festival. Also spilling onto the streets, the closing concert takes place at mighty St Paul's Cathedral.

As it heads towards its 50th birthday - it was first held in 1962 - the City of London Festival continues to infuse the capital's traditionally commerce-orientated financial heart with the very best of art and music. Many venues, especially the beautifully decorated and ornate Guild Halls, are rarely open to the public, so it's not just music that is the draw.

In 2010, the climax is reached at St Paul's Cathedral with Sir John Eliot Gardiner's performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra (8 July).
