Blairgowrie & Rattray Highland Games

As traditional as whisky and tartan, Highland Games are an essential part of the Scottish summer. Blairgowrie & Rattray Highland Games, on Bogles Field, includes the usual "heavy" sports as well as Scottish dancing and bagpiping.

The "heavy" events include big men in tartan sweating profusely as they hurl large objects as far as possible: shots (which are putt), hammers (which are thrown) and cabers (which are tossed). Then there are the weights - heavier than either the shot or the hammer. The 28lb weight is for throwing the greatest distance, while the 56lb weight is for throwing the highest. For teams there is a tug-of-war.

Blairgowrie & Rattray Highland Games also includes a dog show, a four-mile hill race, track and field as well as shinty matches.
