Princess Diana Memorial Playground
Princess Diana would have loved this playground in Kensington Gardens, which was built to commemorate her spirit and important charity work with children. It occupies the site of an earlier playground funded by J M Barrie (author of Peter Pan), who, like Princess Diana was a local who spent many happy times in this part of Hyde Park.
Loosely echoing the Peter Pan story, the playground stimulates creative play with a rigged, three-tiered wooden pirate ship, "tree telephones" and seats carved in the shape of friendly sheep.
The Movement and Musical Garden has a water piano, a wooden zylophone and other imaginative instruments to experiment with. Crocodiles laze on Beach Cove (look for the Mermaid's footprint in the rock) while totem poles carved by Native American Indians are dotted throughout the playground.
There are sand and water play areas in which kids are encouraged to have fun, an under-3s only play area, kiddie lavatories and a café. All the playground's features are beautifully crafted using natural materials, such as wood, sand and stone.
The Diana Memorial Playground is located in Kensington Gardens on the western edge of Hyde Park, a 10-minute walk from Notting Hill Gate or Bayswater tube stations.
