Uncle Vanya
Chekhov returns to the West End in Lindsay Posner's new production of Uncle Vanya, adapted by Christopher Hampton, at the Vaudeville Theatre. Popular Scottish actor Ken Stott takes the title role, with Anna Friel as Yelena and Samuel West as Astrov.
Chekhov always claimed his plays were comedies, but they're bittersweet comedy at best, each suffused with latent (and usually misplaced) longing and presaging the social break-up of Russia in the early 20th century. Set in the middle of nowhere, usually - as here - on a crumbling estate.
Vanya is in love with his brother-in-law's young second wife, Yelena, while Sonya - Vanya's niece - is in love with the doctor Astrov, who only keeps visiting as he too is enamoured of Yelena. The tension has to snap...
