Museum of Classical Archaeology
The Cast Gallery at the Museum of Classical Archaeology in Cambridge University has the finest collection of plaster casts of Roman and Greek sculpture in the world. One of the only surviving museums of its kind, the collection comprises more than 600 exhibits, housed in the Classics Faculty.
This kind of museum dates back to the 19th century when Classical art was all the rage, travel was expensive and photography still pretty rare, so every time a new piece of sculpture was discovered all the major European museums obtained casts of it.
The Museum of Classical Archaeology was founded in 1884. Soon after Art and Archaeology became part of the Classics degree and the casts were used for lectures. Nothing is original here, but it's still a chance to see nearly all the best-known (and lesser known) works from the Classical world under one roof.
