Canal Art Trail

Coventry Canal, the only waterway in Britain to terminate in the centre of a city, is host to what has been described as the longest outdoor art gallery in the country: the Canal Art Trail.

Over 5.5 miles of canal, between Hawkesbury Junction and the city centre Canal Basin, 31 different artists have created 39 works of art to reflect the history and natural setting of the waterway, which was an early driver of Coventry's industrial development.

Among the artists represented are Walenty Pytel, William Glanfield and James Butler, whose larger-than-lifesize sculpture of engineer James Brindley stands in the basin, poring over plans for the canal he created towards the end of the 1760s.
