Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery
The Plymouth City Museum and Fine Art Gallery houses a wide variety of collections covering the fine and decorative arts, natural history and human history. Special displays include fine examples of Plymouth porcelain, Joshua Reynolds paintings and the precious 18th-century Cottonian collection of Old Masters, rare prints and books.
The emphasis of the museum's collection is planted firmly in local heritage, reflecting something of the history and taste of the local population. Much of the work comes from donations and bequests made to the City. These include important collections of considerable size such as the Hurdle, Judge, Harmsworth, St Aubyn, Serjeant, Barstow and Benham, covering all the main disciplines and spanning objects dating from many periods.
Due to the size of its collection, the museum is unable to display all of its work at any one time. This leads to a varied programme of exhibitions complemented by touring exhibitions from other organisations.
