Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park
Escape the city to enjoy fresh air at Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. The 350km boundary encloses beautiful Scottish countryside - lochs, rivers, forests and dramatic hills - criss-crossed by footpaths, bridle paths and cycle tracks.
Opened in 2002, this is Scotland's first national park, with rolling lowland to the south (near Glasgow) and high mountains to the north. The best way to begin an exploration is to visit the state-of-the-art visitor centre on the shores of Loch Lomond in Balloch. The Gateway Centre is staffed by National Park and Tourist Board experts who can offer information, guided walks, nature trails and maps of the park. There is an easily accessible woodland and loch-side stroll to start you off.
The park comprises 21 Munros (hills over 3000 feet), 20 Corbetts (summits of between 2500 and 3000 feet), two forest parks and 57 sites designated for their special nature conservation value.
The National Park has four key aims: to conserve and enhance the natural and cultural heritage of the area; to promote sustainable use of natural resources; to promote public understanding and enjoyment of the area's special qualities and to promote sustainable economic and social development of local communities.
