Hawick Reivers Festival
Historic Scottish Border town Hawick celebrates its lawless Border Reiver history, full of cross-country cattle rustling and family feuds. On Saturday night there is a torchlight procession ending with a bonfire and fireworks at Volunteer Park.
Border Reivers - a kind of local cowboy - defined much of the history of the border zone between Scotland and England for some 500 years between the 13th to 17th centuries. The castle rustlers and raiders, who became known as Reivers, gave the words "blackmail" and "bereaved" to the English language and their derring-do exploits have been handed down from generation to generation in ballads, songs and stories.
Hawick, in the heart of the Borders, held its first Reivers Festival in 2002.
