Changing the Guard
Join the throng of visitors outside Buckingham Palace every other day to witness the Changing of the Guard.
The correct name for the ceremony is in fact Guard Mounting; it takes place in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace at 11.30am and lasts about 45 minutes (apart from in very wet weather).
This is one of the oldest and most familiar of all royal ceremonies, the exchange of duty between the New Guard and the Old Guard, drawn from one of the regiments of Foot Guards. The handover is accompanied by the Guards band, which plays anything from traditional military marches to pop tunes.
On some months, the ceremony takes place on odd days, on others, even days, depending on the number of days in the month. To check, either call or drop by the London Tourist Office, or phone the information line.
